Russia suspends inspections of US nuclear arsenal

According to Russia, the US is currently at an advantage as it has deprived Moscow of the right to carry out inspections on US territory.

Russia has informed the United States of America (USA) that it has “temporarily” suspended on-site inspections of its strategic nuclear weapons. These inspections were part of the arms control treaty known as New START, in effect since February 2011.

According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted by the BBC, the US is currently at an advantage with regard to this agreement given that it has deprived Russia of the right to carry out inspections on American territory.

According to the tutelage, US sanctions imposed on Russia on Ukraine have changed conditions between the countries, necessitating the suspension of the last remaining arms reduction agreement between former Cold War rivals.

This agreement limits the number of long-range nuclear weapons that each country can deploy to 1,550 and according to Russia this suspension was allowed under the terms of the treaty “in exceptional circumstances”.

This Russian decision comes a week after US President Joe Biden said he was ready to work on a new nuclear weapons deal with President Vladimir Putin with the current deal expiring in 2026.
